We often talk about the body keeping score, but for those of us walking this earth with locs, the crown keeps the ultimate receipt.
In Black and Caribbean traditions, our hair has never been just "hair." It is an antenna. It is a spiritual ledger, a physical manifestation of our timeline, and a direct extension of our nervous system. For years, I’ve treated my own crown with meticulous reverence, keeping it clean, avoiding heavy styling, ensuring it stays rich, soft, and completely free of lint. At 33 inches long, flowing from my crown straight down to my waistline, my locs are a testament to patience and vitality. I trim them when necessary, meaning there isn't a single weakened loc on my head.
Or so I thought.
Recently, I went through a heavy, intense 4-day period where I made the definitive decision to permanently remove someone from my personal life. I was reclaiming my peace, severing an attachment, and closing a doorway into my universe of energy flow.
Right after that window closed, I was handling my hair and noticed something that shook me to my core: a single loc had begun to drastically thin out.
The Somatic Timeline of a Soul Tie
I don't tie my hair back tightly. I don’t use harsh bands, and there is absolutely no mechanical or physical explanation for thinning at that specific length. Yet, there it was. A sudden, undeniable frailty in an otherwise unbroken strand.
As I held that loc, an immediate, undeniable realization washed over me. The location of that thinning wasn't random. If you calculate the rate of human hair growth, the length from that thinned point to the very tip of the loc perfectly mirrored the exact amount of time I had allowed this person into my life.
The weight of that ending loc was carrying the literal energetic strain of the relationship.
The moment I decided to clear my energy field, the physical anchor of that connection gave way. It felt as though my ancestors had stepped into the room and whispered a profound secret directly into my ear: The body knows when it's time to let go, even before the mind finishes rationalizing it.
This is the somatic connection in its purest, most raw form. Our hair absorbs our environments, our triumphs, and our traumas. When we carry people who drain us, who misalign with our frequency, or who disrupt our peace, our crown bears the weight of that energetic heavy lifting. The thinning wasn't a sign of weakness; it was an eviction notice written by my own spirit.
The Ritual of Final Release
Discovering a spiritual sign like this requires a spiritual response. You don't just chop a loc like that and throw it in the household trash. When our hair holds a physical record of a severed connection, the act of removal becomes a sacred ritual.
Once I fully release this thinned section, the finality of the disconnection will be complete. There are two traditional paths for a cleansing of this magnitude:
-
The Element of Fire: Burning the severed hair, allowing the flames to consume the residual energy and transmute the strain into smoke, scattering it back into nothingness.
-
The Element of Water: Submerging the strand in blessed water, washing away the spiritual tie, and returning the energy to the earth cleanly.
By intentionally releasing that physical piece of the timeline, the energetic loop is closed forever.
Let's Talk: Has Your Crown Ever Spoken to You?
I am sharing this because the clarity of this moment was too loud to keep to myself. I know the depth of our ancestral roots, and I know that our hair speaks to us if we are quiet enough to listen. I am certain of what I felt, what I saw, and the ancestral wisdom that anchored it.
But it leaves me incredibly inquisitive about the collective experience.
Have you ever experienced a sudden, inexplicable change in your hair; a snap, a shed, a sudden thinning, or a shift in texture that perfectly collided with a major spiritual shift or the ending of a relationship? Did your crown ever drop a heavy weight the moment you reclaimed your power?
Drop your thoughts, your rituals, and your stories below. Let's trace these roots together.
